Welcome To Pottington Road

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman and welcome to our first National 3 Southwest League game of 2016 and what a titanic match-up we have for you as we Welcome Brixham to Pottington Road today and extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and supporters and hope they have an enjoyable day here today.

We would also like to thank our sponsors St Austell Brewery and Perry Mears for today's game. Thanks for all your tremendous support over the years which is hugely appreciated by the club and has been extremely valuable in getting us to where we are today.

For those of you completely baffled by the results and league table on the England Rugby website fear not as Barnstaple are still top, but by only a point from Lydney and we did beat Old Pats 61-19 not the other way round as they have it. The away game last week to Ivybridge was rained off and this fixture has been rescheduled for February 27th anyone wishing to make the trip down to Ivybridge and support our boys contact Verity to see if their are any places on the coach.

Now are you ready for another epic encounter today as two of National 3's best teams take to the field. Since Brixhams promotion in 2012 Barnstaple have only beaten them once an 18-14 home win in 2014. This years meeting though have produced some of the best rugby seen with 2 epic encounters. The first saw both teams fight to the wire at Brixham in what was described as an end to end free flowing game of rugby as both teams exchanged scores right to the end where Brixham emerged winners securing the win 39-34. Then it was the Devon Cup two weeks later as Brixham made the Journey to Pottington Road. Another massive game which saw both teams exchange leads right up to the end where a Winston James try cut Brixhams lead to just one point. Unfortunately a difficult conversion was missed giving Brixham another victory.

However since that day The Chiefs have gone from strength to strength winning as many away games so far this season as they did the whole of last season and that cup loss was the only defeat we have suffered at home so far, which has propelled them to the top of Nation 3 Southwest. As for Brixham they too have had an impressive season which see's them 4th also with 10 wins so far.

The Development XV unfortunately had their game cancelled last week and now have a string of away games throughout January. The next time we see them here at Pottington Road is not until February 20th where they take on Crediton.

Good luck to both teams and I hope the conditions won't spoil what is promising to be a fantastic game of rugby and lets hear the Barum roar from the stands to give the lads just that little bit extra energy to win this game.

Steven PERRYPez's Ponderings

Welcome all,

Last time out saw a fantastic crowd at Pottington Road, and with three present colts take the field during our win against Bideford. The production line continues. The mini and juniors are doing a fantastic job with the future players.

The weather has been particularly beautiful in this part of the world over the festive period, so training has taken a bit of a back burner. We have had a video/chalk and talk session as well as a good session on the Astro. I'm sure the lads will be excited to get back out on the paddock in front of the faithful, and produce a performance.

Thanks again for your support

Junior News

The Junior Section run 10 teams from Under 6’s to Under 16’s with approximately 280 children signed on to play rugby.

The whole of the Junior Section is run by a band of volunteers.  This takes a huge commitment by a very large group of dedicated people.  All age groups have a Team Coordinator; First Aider and at least 3 coaches some have more all of which have been on RFU courses, and many of our coaches also coach at County Level for different age groups.

I am in my first season as Chairman and thankfully I have a great group of Section Officers and General Committee members to keep me on the straight and narrow. However we are always looking for more volunteers to join our happy band.

We are running a Referees Course in conjunction with the RFU over two Sundays starting on Sunday 17th January.  If you have recently stopped playing our great game and still want to be involved why not give refereeing a go. For more information please contact myself or Verity White for more details.
