Welcome to pottington road

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to another fantastic National Three Southwest match today as The Barnstaple Chiefs play host to The Old Redcliffians. We extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and any supporters who have made the long journey from Bristol and hope you enjoy your day here today.

Well what a couple of weeks we have had since the home win against Cleve. Firstly there was the away game at Ding's Crusaders which was played on an almost unplayable pitch. Barnstaple's impressive defense again held firm to deny Ding's anything more than just three points whilst Matt Gohl scored the games only try after being put through by JP. With JP also converting the try and scoring a penalty the 10-3 win also meant that The Chiefs have now set a new winning streak of seven games and come into this one today hoping to extend it to eight.

Standing in our way though is today's opponents Old Redcliffians who despite being mid-table have conceded only 201 points so far this season the lowest in the league. They also have an impressive away record this season with 4 wins out of 5 games played on the road, and as we know these Bristol teams are tough and today's game has the makings of a thrilling encounter providing the weather plays ball.

Then last week without even playing Barnstaple were able to further cement their position as Bournemouth beat Lydney 14-5 and while this may be good news it does mean That The Chiefs next visitors to Pottington Road on March 5th, Bournemouth, are back on the march after narrowly losing to Exmouth with three wins on the bounce. With an away match with Lydney before then these next few weeks are going to be big games for the Chiefs.

Winston James still leads the try scorers in the league with 10 tries in 14 games played this season whilst JP has dropped to second place in the overall points scored this season to Newton Abbot's Robert Avery-Wright, which is no surprise as JP's injury has meant he has played 6 fewer games.

The Development XV had another punishing defeat to Tiverton two weeks ago losing 48-12 and are hoping to settle things when they visit Sidmouth today. You will be able to voice your encouragement of them next week as they finally return home for a game against Crediton.

Good luck to both teams today and here's to an enthralling game and lets hear the Barum roar which has been impressive in recent weeks even down at Ding's Crusaders 2 weeks ago which if anyone was there could attest to how loud the following supporters were that day. Don't forget the clubhouse will be showing the Wales v Scotland game afterwards.

Steven PERRYPez's Ponderings

Welcome all,
Last Saturday, I sat at home glued to Twitter, cuddling our newborn daughter (I have purchased a shotgun!) waiting for updates. Seeing the final result  was very satisfying. The players, coaches, backroom staff and support went to a tough ground in difficult conditions and came home with the result. It highlights the growth of the players and shows improved ability to play away from Pottington Rd.
Today will be a very difficult fixture, Old Reds defeated us at home last year and were a penalty goal away from winning in our first meeting this season. We must show in our performance what it means to wear the shirt.
Looking forward to an exciting game and your fantastic support.

Junior News

The junior section have not had a good start for 2016 with 99%  of their games being cancelled due to the weather, although they have still managed to train at othe local venues includin Yeo Valley School and Pilton College.

Tthe Club need to say a massive thank you to Rueban Chugg and the Under 8's who's Photo won the club a new washing machine supplied by AEG. Their Picture was 1 of 20 picked out of over 1000 photos of 'what rugby means'.  The Under 8's also had a great time last week as they went down to join the Chiefs at Sandy park for a training session and then showing their Barnstaple tops off on BT Sports, Well done boys and keep up the good work.
