Welcome to Pottington Road

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today's National 3 Southwest top of the table clash as league leaders Barnstaple Chiefs welcome 4th place Lydney. We extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and any supporters who made the long trip to our shores and hope you have an enjoyable day here at Pottington Road.

We would also like to thank our sponsors for today's game Slee Blackwell Solicitors and Natwest for your continuing support which is hugely appreciated by the club and fans alike. We hope you enjoy a classic game today.

We would also like to congratulate Natwest on their newly transformed branch in the High Street which will be opened by the Mayor at 10am today before they all come down to the club at 12.30. They are linking their launch event with a fund raiser at Barnstaple Rugby Club and today the branch staff are raising money for the ND Hospice. There are some great prizes including a squad signed Exeter Chiefs Jersey and tickets to an Exeter Chiefs European home game. Staff will be selling raffle tickets and 'shaking a bucket' throughout the day at the club so please give generously. And if you want to have a relaxing five minutes pop down to the newly transformed Natwest and check it out.

Well another week and still riding high as League leaders. Barnstaple did it again by going to Old Redcliffians and eking out a very fragile win beating them 7-5. With their sloop and a strong wind this was never going to be a classic but our boys went down there determined and by half time were leading 7-0 through a Matt Gohl try converted by Luke Berry. The second half saw a fantastic defensive effort as Old Reds threw everything they had at us and did manage to breach us on one occasion but were unable to convert it. So a great result which now see's us 6 points clear at the top of Nation 3. However there is only 9 points between the top nine teams and this season is going to be very tough right up to the last weekend in April. We did lose Mark Berry and Chris Lowrie to injury during the game which is a huge blow as their experience is invaluable but as we have seen this season so far, the replacements have been gigantic in their response when given the chance to play and we will be hoping for more of the same today.

Having lost their opening two games of the season Lydney are riding high at the moment going five games without defeat which included away wins at the Hornets and Old Cents, and last week a home win against Old Pats. This has seen them climb to 4th so far and as we know they are a very good side and makes today's game a real tantalizing prospect.

Enough from me i hope we witness a great game of rugby today. Lets make sure the Chiefs hear our roar today to help them to another famous victory. Good luck to both teams today and i shall be looking forward to a celebratory bevy or two afterwards.

Steven PERRYPez's Ponderings

Welcome all,
Every away trip makes the lads appreciate what we have at home: Great facilities and Fantastic support. Playing away is the biggest hurdle we face, that and injuries. It shows the character and qualities that we have developed together when we grind out results away from home as we did at Old Reds last weekend. The conditions were difficult, the wind was travelling in the same direction as the slope and the bottom of the hill was a bog (hope that paints a lovely picture).
We have recently picked up a few more injuries and are testing the depth and quality of our squad, which has impressed me so much this year. Mark Berry, Chris Lowrie and Winston James are added to the injury list which already includes Shane Maddock, Jordan Petherbridge, Toby Williamson, Ryan Brend and Matt Curgenven. Hopefully on a brighter note Ryan Carter will make a welcome return today: a great club man who adds a huge amount of quality off the field, oh and on it!
I’m excited to see this young Barum side selected today and it proves to me when I look at the team sheet that we have a lot of quality players with potential. I hope the lads show energy, physicality and honesty and do the shirt and club justice. Looking forward to hearing the Barum Spirit.
