Welcome to Pottington Road

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another fast and furious National 3 Southwest fixture which see's the Chiefs play host to Gloucester's very own Old Centralians. We extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and any supporters who made the long trip to North Devon today and hope you enjoy your stay here at Pottington Road.

Well after that very hard fought draw against The Hornets here 2 weeks ago which saw Barnstaple knocked off 1st place by both Brixham and Exmouth, The Chiefs went to Chippenham last week hoping to make amends and regain that no1 spot. In very stormy conditions and gale force winds The Chiefs began the first half with the wind behind them and James Bath opening the scoring with further tries from Winston James and Sam Roberts meant Barnstaple were leading 17-0 at half time. Chippenham did try and come back at us in the second half but a late tackle on Will Topps lead to a red card for one of their players and further tries for Will Topps and Chris Lowrie sealed the win 29-5 and a bonus point for the Chiefs. That's three away wins before Christmas so well done lads and keep it going. This game also saw Isaac Hydleman, signed on loan from Cornish All Blacks, start at fly-half and add two conversions in gale force conditions. This meant that Steve Perry was able to take a break from playing leaving hooker James Starkey as the only man to have started every league game for Barnstaple this season.

Old Centralians have had a difficult season so far, starting well winning their first two fixtures it has been difficult since then for them with last weeks loss seeing them second from bottom. We all know how injuries can affect teams and their last game at home to Old Patesians saw 17 first team players unavailable and has been like this for a number of weeks now. Judging by previous seasons they should come strong as their injury list shortens and makes it imperative not to underestimate them today

Barnstaple Development XV bounced back from two defeats with a six try win over Okehampton II. With a blustery wind blowing straight across the pitch, but, the rain thankfully holding off Barum played down the slope in the first half. two tries from Jake Meredith and one from James Lock accompanied by 2 conversions from Henry Meredith, Barnstaple lead at half time 19-0. Jake meredith finalised his hat trick with the final score of the game and second half tries from Shaun East and James Lock saw Barnstaple shut out Okehampton with a 40-0 win.

By now many of you will be aware of the tragic loss of one of our Rugby Community, Lily Partridge who sadly passed away whilst attending a DRFU County Ladies Development Day at North Tawton RFC last Sunday. Lily was a member of Exonian Ladies Rugby and Topsham RFC. It has been respectfully suggested that Lily should be remembered at all Home Games in Devon on Saturday, however the family have requested a minutes applause rather than a minutes silence which we will be observing before kickoff today.

JUNIOR NEWS

Barnstaple under 16s are coached by Pat Mcmanus, Chris Drayton and Andrew Swales, the coaches have been with the squad for three years with the ethos to give as many players the chance to play rugby, but most of all have fun. Through the last few years the squad registered to the club has increased to 32 players, this season we have even gained a couple of ex-football players and some swimmers who have all added skill and athleticism to the group.

The squad has developed into a very close knit team and the coaches have encouraged players to “self-police”.  Everyone must train to earn selection and they all take turns in picking up dirty shirts, tidying the changing rooms and clearing the tables after eating –  all players are equal and as important as their team mates.

Barnstaple Rugby Club rely on home grown talent and we hope to see most of them playing colts rugby next season and then onto senior rugby.

Swaler.

Steven PERRYPEZ'S PONDERINGS

Welcome all,

As we approach the half-way point of the year it’s an opportunity to reflect.

Preseason was old school, and showed the impact overcoming shared pain can do in bringing men together. It has been noticeable in our performances that we work hard for each other, especially defensively and continue to play until the final whistle.

At the beginning of the year we had two players for every position, which has been required as our injury list has been unprecedented. Amazingly James Starkey is the only player to start every game so far this year.

Our league position definitely reflects the quality of the squad.  We have an unbeaten home league record with 5 wins and 1 draw, which shows the impact your support has on our performance. Away from home we have been competitive in all games winning 3 and losing 2, only the Bournemouth loss looks comfortable, however the game was in the balance throughout.

So far this year Sam Roberts, Luke Knight and Bailey Miles from last year’s colts have represented the first team, at least another 5 have represented the seconds, which shows that the mini and junior production line is thriving, long may it continue.  You just have to look at the first team side and see how many local, quality players the club are producing.

Today we play Old Cents who I respect highly as they completed the double over us last year. The home game was lung busting and end to end and they deservedly won. League positions go out of the window every week, it’s all about the performance on the day.

Don’t forget that Boxing Day is fast approaching and we are at home this year, please come down and join in the festivities, it should be another closely contested fixture.

Looking forward to an exciting game and hearing the Barum spirit.

Steve
