Welcome to pottington road

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman and welcome to another great National 3 Southwest encounter as The Chiefs prepare to take on Cleve. We extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and supporters and hope they have an enjoyable time here at Pottington Road.

We would also like to thank our sponsors Town and Country, Webbers and DJT Roofing for today's game. Thanks for all your tremendous support over the years which is hugely appreciated by the club and has been extremely valuable in getting us to where we are today.

Well what an awesome couple of weeks we have had recently. Firstly the mud wrestling match with Brixham and the try that never was. Who would have though that momentary lapse by the Brixham player would have made the National news awesome. It was especially pleasing to see JP back in the thick of it with his 2 penalties winning another titanic battle between our two clubs.

Last week saw us down at Newton Abbot for another tough derby match. Having one of their poorest halves of the season so far The Chiefs soon found themselves losing 10 - 0 and down to 14 men as James Starky was yellow carded. However a strong 14 man defensive effort saw them claw their way back into the game. Firstly Toby Williamson called a mark as he caught a poor Avery-Wright kick and then launched a counter-attack with Petherbridge. Running deep into the home half, Williamson drew a tackle and put James away for his 15th try of the season

Further tries from Alex Pike, his first league try for Barnstaple, and Will Topps scoring his second try of the season an eye-catching solo effort put Barnstaple in the lead. However back came Newton Abbot only to finish agonisingly close as a match winning penalty fell short, leaving Barnstaple the winners 20-21.

That’s five wins in a row now for The Chiefs and whilst it was the first time in six games they have conceded 20 points, other than the 2 tries Newton Abbot got they struggled to penetrate our defense. This still leaves Barnstaple five points clear at the top of the table.

Cleve visit us having won 7 and lost 7 this season. Against Barnstaple last time out The Chiefs won 26-37. However 3 of Cleve’s wins this season have been on the road including a 21-52 mauling of Ivybridge, and they have only narrowly lost to both Exmouth and Lydney by just one point, and come here having won their last two matches.

The Development XV had a tougher time of it last week with 26 players unavailable and only a squad of 14 they lost their match 31-7. Hopefully when they take to the field again in two week time there will be more players available.

Good luck to both teams today and i hope we see a great game of rugby and remember to scream your lungs out in the terraces this afternoon and lets see if we can make it 6 wins on the trot. .

Steven PERRYPez's Ponderings

Welcome all,

Another 2 Devon Derby wins, both against tough, talented opposition. It was really pleasing to see us grind out ugly wins. Its been a good habit, created through work rate, attitude and especially team spirit. Defence, Set Piece and Goal kicking have been particular highlights.
The fantastic thing about our sport is that every week you are challenged to either repeat success or get back on the horse after a loss. If we continue to work hard for each other and strive for improved performance results will follow. Looking forward to a tough encounter and hearing the Barum spirit.

Thanks for your support

Steve
