Welcome to Pottington Road

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to another National 3 Southwest encounter which today see's the Chiefs take on Bristols very own Ding's Crusaders who visit us today. We would like to extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and any supporters that have made the long trip to North Devon.

Today's opponents last visited Pottington Road on 1st February 2003 in the then South West 1 league, beating us 11-14. This was the year they won the league losing only 3 games all season and gained promotion to the National League 3. So far this season, having been relegated from National League 2, they have had a tricky start winning only 2 of their opening 5 matches including a 19-16 win over the Old Pats last time out.

The Chiefs have continued their winning ways with a great second half comeback away to Cleve 2 weeks ago. Despite starting the better Cleve went in at half time 14-6 ahead and with JP injured with a dislocated shoulder early in the second half the signs were ominous for a troubling day. Barnstaple had other ideas and hit back hard with a try each for Winston and Linford, Barnstaple edged ahead 19-23. Then the Winston James show went full throttle as he landed two more tries to complete his hat trick and lead Barnstaple to a great win 26-37 which keeps us at the top of Nation 3 Southwest although there is only 2 points separating the top four teams.

Winston's hat trick also means he is the leagues top try scorer with 5 tries while Linford ties for second place with four. JP also tops the charts as top points scorer with a total of 76 points, unfortunately the dislocated shoulder he suffered puts him out of action until at least January probably longer so we wish him a very speedy recovery.

Old rivalries were renewed last week as the Development XV took on Bideford 2nd's. With Shaun East captaining the side Barnstaple ran in 6 tries including Max Lees scoring his first senior try in the 61st minute to win the game 34-12. Sitting 4th at the moment the Development XV welcomes 3rd place Tiverton for today's game which if they win will see them further climb the table.

Good luck to all the teams playing today and i hope for some fantastic rugby out there and a Barnstaple win by both our teams will be the icing on the cake.

Ground staff wet weather gear

Money raised by the Old Secondary Modern School boys that attended their reunion in the summer has been put to good use with the purchase of wet weather clothing for our band of unpaid volunteers who man the gate on match days in all weathers and the ground staff that work so hard to keep the pitches in first class condition. Our thanks go to Gerald Thorne and Tony Freeman for organising the reunion and to all those that contributed on the day.

Steven PERRYPez's ponderings

Welcome all,

Last week’s 5 point win at Cleve was very pleasing, we showed character to grind out a victory, which early in the second half didn't looked like happening. The Skipper must have had a magnet as he somehow appeared with a hat trick of tries from nowhere...fantastic, the changing room was a great place to be. We also I'm afraid lost JP to a shoulder dislocation. I and the lads hope he has a speedy recovery and look forward to his development as a fly half at the club.

Today sees the return of Alex Pike and a debut for Matt Curgenven, which creates a new centre partnership and more competition for places which bodes well for the future, especially with the return of Ryan Carter, Toby Williamson, Ryan Brend and Will Topps between now and Christmas.

Seems like I've been talking too much about the we all know the forwards are far more important and their form at the begging of this season has reflected our league position. 'Forwards win matches, backs determine by how many'.

I hope we do the shirt justice today, with honesty, hard work and physicality.

Thank you for your continued support, it makes a huge positive impact on the lad’s performance.
