Welcome to Pottington Road

Good afternoon everyone and prepare yourselves for another heart stopping, adrenalin pumping, nail biting National 3 Southwest encounter today as The Chiefs prepare to take on old rivals Newton Abbot and a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and supporters to Pottington Road today and we hope you thoroughly enjoy your day here.

We welcome to the club today's sponsors Nissan Barnstaple and Camel Glass. We hope you have a great day and enjoy the game and we look forward to your continuing support which makes everything we are trying to achieve at the club possible and is hugely appreciated.

Today's game provides Newton Abbot an early chance for revenge this season after The Chiefs beat them at their own ground last season 32 -26. Their big start to this season suggest this will be another hard fought battle with Newton Abbot scoring over 40 points in each of their two home fixtures so far this season, although they lost on the road going down 27 - 16 to Old Centralians in week 2.

As for The Chiefs they do like leaving it late this season. After JP's breathtaking last minute penalty to see off Exmouth it took an Ashlee Crouch try and JP conversion to finally see off an impressive Ivybridge 2 weeks ago, Losing 6 - 3 at half time Barnstaple rallied with tries from the captain Winston James and Nat Bayet but each time they scored Ivybridge replied with a score of their own until Ashlee crashed through in the 77th minute.

Last week saw The Chiefs visit Brixham in what was described as an end to end free flowing game of rugby. Barnstaple arrived at Brixham with a number of 1st team players unavailable and a young squad, but tries from Chris Lowrie and Jordan Petherbridge helped give Barnstaple the lead at half time 12 - 20. The second half saw both teams exchange leads as first Brixham went ahead 26- 20 then The Chiefs, with a great move starting with Steve perry's long pass to Will Topps who released Sam Roberts for a great try, took over at 26 - 27. Winston then secured a bonus point scoring as the pack drove him over for a try and a Barnstaple lead of 29-34. Unfortunately Brixham had the last say in this fantastic match with a converted try and penalty to win 39-34.

The Colts were also in action last weekend hosting Bideford in their first home game of the season. The first half saw the Colts under pressure from the off and struggled to recover as Bideford finished the half deservedly ahead but a second half resurgence saw Barnstaple reassert their class and destroy Bideford 28 - 10.

Good luck to both teams today and I'm looking forward to a cracking game of rugby to get me ready for tonight's world cup match between England and Wales. The bar is staying open for this massive encounter tonight with specials so check to back page and I'll see you after the game for that celebratory pint or two.  Don't forget next week The Chiefs are at home to Brixham in the Devon Seniors Cup a win here will see us take on Bideford in the next round Bar opens at 12 kick off 2.30pm

Steven PERRYPez's Ponderings

Hello all,
Today is an opportunity for the players to make the shirt theirs, we are slowly seeing guys return to create competition within the squad which is fantastic. Shane Maddock comes in to replace Ashlee Crouch who has impressed recently and will know doubt get an opportunity off the bench. Nat Bayet has also shone recently, but has had to settle for the bench due to the quality of Chris Lowrie, Scott Warren and the Talismanic Winston James.
The forwards were excellent last weekend, and I'm looking forward to Mark, Starks, Bryn and Lloydy continuing their form in the front 5. The backs have incredible potential, JP, Linny, Sam, Topper, Bathy all elusive and exciting players and don't forget 18 try hero last year Luke Berry!
It's going to be a cracker today, Newton have recently recruited players to strengthen their team and I expect a ding dong affair.
Let's hear the Barum spirit, get behind the men as it raises their performance.

Thanks as always,

Steve

Junior News

The Under 16's had a good game a couple weeks ago at Crediton and only lost by 2 point. They are due to be playing Exmouth tomorrow morning at home with a 11 am KO. so why not pop down and see the boys in action.

Tomorrow will also see the Under 13's play at home v Teighnmouth at 1045 followed by the Under 15's who will host Redruth at 12 noon.

Next week will see our Juniors start playing and to start them off the Under 11's and Under 12's will travel to Exeter to take part in the National Landrover Cup which could see them playing at Twickenham, if they do well. SO fingers crossed for them and I will keep you informed on how they do.

We are still looking for a few Volenteers so if you are any good with number and fancy helping out please contact Verity or Alan.
