Welcome to Pottington Road

Afternoon everyone and after last weeks nail biter I hope you have all recovered. Today's National 3 fixture and the 2nd of our Devon derbies see's us welcoming newly promoted Ivybridge to Pottington Road. Congratulations to the players, coaches, committee, and supporters on your promotion to National 3 and we hope you have a great day here and that your visit is as memorable as it will be enjoyable.

Today's match is sponsored by Barnstaple's own Junior section whose up and coming players may one day find themselves playing for The Chiefs

What a finish to last weeks game by The Chiefs, I really do not need that sort of excitement on a regular basis please. The first half saw us dominate last years 2nd place Exmouth with tries from Jordan Petherbridge and Linford Brock taking the home team to a 17-3 lead. Exmouth however came back strongly in the second half and managed to level the game at 20-20. This year though we were not going to be denied and a ghostly silence descended on Pottington road as Barnstaple were awarded a penalty with a minute left in the game. Jordan then stepped up to slot it through the posts to give Barnstaple Chiefs their first win over Exmouth in 4 seasons.

Hopefully that game should have cleared out any lingering cobwebs and the lads should be fired up for today's encounter, and they will need to be as Ivybridge themselves had a great start to their National 3 campaign leading the Old Pats throughout the game to win 13-9. It was a great first home win for them and with some key players returning for today their confidence will be high. The Chiefs also welcome back some key players with James Bath, Bryn Jenkins and Luke Berry returning to the squad.

The Development XV were also in action at home against Exmouth 2nds. Fielding 7 of last years winning Colts team they struggled with a strong Exmouth 2nds and finally lost 18-43. Today see's them away to Ivybridge and next weekend the 19th come and watch them take on Brixham 2nds. The Colts will also be playing their first home game of the season against Bideford that day, and that's one match up you won't want to miss.

We also welcome today from Devon RFU, President Maureen Jackson, President elect David Butt and Hon. Secretary Treve Mitchell, who will be presenting our very own Verity White with her Leadership Award which she has worked really hard to get. Special thanks go to Mac Bayliss, Verity's mentor, for a job well done in copping with her. And congratulations Verity.

So with that said its time open up those lungs and stamp those feet as we push the Chiefs over that try line for hopefully another Devon derby win. Good luck to both teams today and I look forward to a pint or three after the game.

Pez's Ponderings

Last Saturday was a fantastic day. Beautiful sunshine on a pristine surface played in front of our wonderful supporters. Oh and a Devon Derby win!
On reflection a solid first half performance paved the way for the victory, which was sealed with tenacity at the break down and calmness in front of the sticks.
We still have plenty to work on but it's nice to reflect on these areas to improve when you get the W. It's also great to see players at the end of the game frustrated and wanting to improve, this bodes well for the future.
This season will be a squad effort and Saturday proved the depth and quality we have at the club. Missing were through injury or unavailability: Ryan Carter, Alex Pike, Matt Curgenven, James Bath, Toby Williamson, Bryn Jenkins, Brad Drew, Scott Warren, Mike Peek, Luke Berry and Mark Galliford.
Today's game will be exciting, I'm sure our opponents will be confident having sealed 2 promotions consecutively and beaten old Pats last weekend. It will be up to us to set high standards, and focus on performance. I hope it is an entertaining game that will get the Barum spirit and noise flowing. We do appreciate your support and it does have an immeasurable effect on the men.

Junior News

Well the 1st Sunday of junior rugby went really well with over 300 children now registered to play junior rugby here at Barnstaple, We are very luck to say that we are full at most age groups again this year, with only a few place in the older age groups.

Today we have invited all our coaches and volunteers to a buffet before the game to say a big thank you for all the Hard work that they put in week in week out, with which we would not beable to run a Junior section.  If you can help the junior section in any way please speak to Alan East or Verity White.

Tomorrow see's the start of the U16's league were they will travel to Crediton along with the the U13's and U15's, While the U14's will play them at home with a 1130 am Ko.
