Welcome to Pottington Road

Welcome back everyone and I hope you had an enjoyable summer break and, like me, are just chomping at the bit for some great rugby. We start our 2015/16 National 3 Southwest campaign today by playing host to Devon rivals Exmouth and extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and supporters to Pottington Road and hope they enjoy their day here. Also today we have the return of our Merit Table winning Development XV as they start thier campaign for an unprecedented 4th successive title against Exmouth 2nds

We would like to thank our sponsors today Westerly BMW and Tony Pryce, Thanks for all your tremendous support over the years which is hugely appreciated by the club.

Today's season opener is the first of four local derbies we play this month, three of them here at Pottington Road so pencil into your diaries the 19th and 26th of September as we take on firstly Brixham and then Newton Abbot. If you can make the journey the 12th see's us visit newly promoted Ivybridge.

We welcome back to the fold James Bath and Toby Williamson and look forward to seeing them regularly this season. We also welcome several of the Colts who have now graduated to the senior squad and can't wait to see them display their skills on the pitch.

Talking of the Colts congratulations on winning the Lovell Cup at Sandy park on 3rd of May. Up against Honiton Colts, the Barnstaple lads dominated right from the start and looked every bit the champions they were to become as they beat Honiton 20-0 with 2 tries from Hallam Chapman, a third from Sam Roberts and a man of the Match performance from Andy Black. Well done to Gus Meredith and the rest of the coaching staff and the players for an amazing result.

Special thanks should also go to Tony Wasley and the rest of the grounds staff, following the abuse our pitches had to put up with during the off season with everything from mobile homes parked on them to various marquee tents pitched for different events, for the Herculean effort they put in to ensure all the pitches are in shape for the start of the season,

Finally everyone will be aware of the tragic news about Jerry Collins and his partner Alana Madill in the south of France on June 5th. As a mark of respect both Barnstaple teams will be wearing the club socks Northern United Rugby Club (Norths), Jerry's Home club. Special thanks go to Derek Morris of Heddon Mill Ltd. and Jason Slade of CrossFit North Devon who in conjunction with Norths Rugby Club New Zealand have supplied the socks.

A minutes silence will be observed before the start of the match for Jerry and his partner Alana and also for former Barnstaple player William (Bill) Slee who passed away in Australia this summer aged 72.

Here's to the start of a successful season and lets hear that Barum roar ring out from the stands today enjoy.

Jerry Collins
(1980 - 2015)

On June 5th we awoke to the very sad news that former All Black Jerry Collins had died in a car crash in France along with his wife. The news had a huge impact all around the rugby world, as it was well known what a wonderful guy Jerry was.

Here at Barnstaple we knew better than most just what a genuine bloke he was, after he visited the club in 2007. Jerry was staying in North Devon following the 2007 Rugby World Cup and ended up playing for our second team in a game at Newton Abbot after meeting our Director of Rugby and carrying out a coaching session for some of our minis and juniors.

He went on to wear our socks while playing for the Barbarians at Twickenham. The story is a heart warming one and if you don't know it there'll be plenty of people at the club today who can fill you in. It's just one example of the many times he proved he was a pure rugby man with a heart of gold.

Today we remember Jerry and honour him by repaying the compliment and wearing the socks of his home town club, Northern United.

Hei maumaharatanga ki te tino hoa.

Pez's ponderings

Welcome all,

It's exciting to be at home contesting a Devon derby on day one of the season. This is a wonderful club to represent and your support creates an atmosphere that raises the lads intensity and performance, long may it continue.

Preseason has been a pleasure this year, the boys have created a great environment, with a culture based on team and working hard for each other. We have endured some old school running, which has highlighted each players character as well as giving them a sense of satisfaction on completion. The boys also had a great social last weekend, which is vital in bringing the team together and I look forward to a few green lights later in the year.

Today we shall see where we are at, the players given the opportunity to wear the shirt, I hope will make it their own. Looking forward to seeing you in the bar afterwards.

Steve
