Last season review

What a season 2015/16 was starting with a 3 point win over Exmouth on opening day and 3 derby wins out of 4 the season got off to a flyer which then went from strength to strength. With tight winning finishes away from home and an unbeaten home record right through to the 13th February each game the lads played just built more confidence that something special was happening. Whispers amongst supporters too fearful of jinxing this run by shouting it out wondered whether this was our year, could it really happen.

Then there was the final game of the season away to Exmouth, winner takes all, the day Barnstaple took over a seaside town as we descended upon Exmouth in our droves. Weatherspoon's was running out of beer by midday and couldn't keep up and Exmouth rugby ground was a sea of red and black as the sounds of Barum filled the air, it was a fantastic sight. Unfortunately fortune favoured Exmouth that day but nothing was stopping Barnstaple Chiefs meeting with their destiny and it was the long trip to the county of Kent and Tonbridge on the 30th April and the promotional playoff against Tonbridge Juddians. Although The Chiefs Lead the game 21-7 then again 28-27, it looked like Tonbridge were home and dry with a penalty to take the lead 28-30, that was until with the very last kick of the game JP slotted the penalty home to complete a glorious journey to promotion and National 2 South.

Welcome to Pottington Road

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to what must be the most anticipated start to a new season we have ever witnessed here at Pottington Road as the Barnstaple Chiefs take their place in the 4th tier of the English rugby. It’s great to start our very first campaign in National 2 south at home and today’s opponents from South East London are The Old Elthamians who have travelled nearly 250 miles to be here today. We extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and any supporters who made the long trip to Pottington Road and hope you have an enjoyable time here today.

We would also like to thank our sponsors for today's game Any Weld Ltd., the steel and glass experts based in Fremington on the Old Bideford Road. Your support for Barnstaple RFC is hugely appreciated and fundamental to our continuing success and we hope you see a spectacle of rugby here at today.

Unfortunately as exciting as today is, it is also tinged with sadness as we note the passing of Alan East. Alan had been involved with Barnstaple RFC for 12 years since moving here with his wife and sons. He was the standing Junior Chairman where he worked tirelessly to the benefit of hundreds of young rugby players at the club and beyond. He was a valued member of the club committee and was a key face in and around the clubs Development Squad over the past few seasons, but above all Alan was fun to be around, a great character and a genuine loss for us all at the club who will be sorely missed at Barnstaple RFC. There will be a minutes silence before today’s kick-off to say goodbye to the big man.Good luck to both teams today let’s start the season off with a cracking game of rugby and I want to hear that Barum roar ring out loud today to give our boys the edge in what promises to be a fascinating contest.

Development XV News

So its back to work for our development squad as they try to improve on last season's effort. It was always a tough ask for them after completing three consecutive Merit Table Titles. Especially with so many challenging for 1st team places. The season started off badly with a thumping by Exmouth who would go on to win the title losing only 1 match all season. Three wins leading up to end of October shored things up and despite 2 away defeats big wins against Okehampton and Cullumpton meant they were still going strong. However with a rash of postponed and cancelled fixtures Barnstaple could never find the rhythm that won them 3 successive titles and with 11 wins and 8 loses managed to reach 5th place.

The new season brings new challenges and for the Development XV a new coach with a wealth of playing and coaching experience as Bruce South now takes charge. A new influx of Barnstaple Colts invigorated after another successful season winning the Lovell Cup at Sandy Park for the second year running means that the signs are good for a great season ahead and definitely worth a watch if you have a spare Saturday afternoon.

Club News

Welcome to the start of another season and another glut of social events coming your way. Keep an eye on the Events section to see what we have in store here at Barnstaple RFC over the coming months and of course our website at http://www.barnstaplerfc.co.uk.

Today we would like to welcome some new faces to our ranks. The Development XV have a new coach this season Bruce South. Bruce comes from London and has both played and coached rugby there for over 30 years as a junior, colt and senior. Playing for such clubs as Old Walcountians, Sutton & Epsom and the Metropolitan Police. Bruce Is not just looking to get a successful season under his belt but more importantly to develop the young colts now joining the senior squad to a level where they are challenging for 1st team places.

Then there is Jake Murphy, Rob Dugard and Ben Hilton which you have all read about but also we welcome to the club tighthead Prop Paul thomas from Bideford,  Matt Hauge from Tiverton who can play at blindside flanker, No 8 or lock and rugby league playing New Zealander Dillon Edmonds who also wrestles professionally. Colts who have moved into the senior squad include Alfie Pennyfield, Tom Clark, Will Knill and  Danny Southworth.

Steven PERRYPez's Ponderings

Welcome all,

Today is very exciting, as it is a first for the club, Nat 2 Rugby. I'm looking forward to seeing the performance that we produce and the standard of our opponents. I firmly believe that the squad are motivated by the challenge ahead, and seeing Kev Angel at training on a Tuesday proves that.

The culture in the changing room is great and this is always enhanced by our socials. I admit, I'm getting old and am glad that I will not be initiated as a player again, I'm well known for being a terrible drinker! I thought the new lads performed admirably. The social side of our sport is fundamental to success...not on a Friday though!

Over the Summer we have added Jake Murphy (Plymouth), Ben Hilton (Launceston), Rob Dugard (Launceston), Matt Hague (Tiverton) and Paul Thomas (Bideford). Stepping up a level has definitely helped recruitment, and I am pleased with the quality that we have added, it is never easy leaving a club and I respect all the lads for joining our new adventure.

The production line continues: Tom Dunbavin, Tom Clarke, Alfie Pennyfield and Ryan Lee to name a few have stepped up from the colts to feature in our preseason games.

Thank you as always for your wonderful support, looking forward to feeling the Barum Spirit.

Steve

Buccaneers News

So another season falls upon us! The good news, the buccaneers are back in the league. After last year's fiasco, which hopefully is now well and truly behind us, so now the bar takings should have a steady upraise.

We train on Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm, We are having good numbers, but new comers are always welcome. We also have a high number of youngsters which should bode well for the future. Our first game is on 10th sept at home, please come along and support us.

The buccaneers would like to wish the first and second teams good luck for the upcoming season.

Cheers Pete and Big H.
