Welcome to Pottington Road

Good Afternoon everyone and welcome to a day of celebrations as we watch Barnstaple’s Development XV being presented with their 3rd consecutive Merit Table Title, a first for this competition. However before that can take place we have 3 games to play first. We would also like to thank our sponsors for today Bray Leino and BMW Westerly who have given great support over the years to our club and help so much with our continued success.

First up at 2pm is a National 3 Southwest clash between our very own Barnstaple Chiefs and Old Redcliffians. We extend a warm welcome to their players, coaches, committee members and supporters and hope they have a thoroughly enjoyable day. The Chiefs have narrowly lost their last 2 games since beating Newton Abbot and whilst picking up bonus points in both those games will no doubt be looking for the win today to get back on track. The Old Redcliffians having a bad start to the season have really come good in 2015 winning 4 of their 6 games since the New Year only losing to Bracknell and Redingensians both away. So we look forward to a very competitive and enjoyable game today and we want to hear that Barum roar from the stands to encourage our boys to the win.

Next up at 3pm on the 2nd pitch is the Barnstaple Colts against Torquay and a win today will push them very close to a visit to Sandy Park to compete in the finals of the Lovell Cup. This will be a great achievement for the lads who are second at the moment 4 points behind Honiton and with today’s game being a Double Header could give them 10 points.

Lastly we have Barnstaple’s Development XV's final match of the season against Crediton 2nd’s today on the main pitch at 3:30. We welcome Crediton to Pottington Road today and hope they enjoy a great day. This game will produce some excellent rugby as the Merit Table winners show us what they can capable of. They have so far not lost a game in 2015 including a 103 - 0 thrashing of Torquay. However Crediton will prove to be much tougher opponents with a closer game earlier in the season where Barnstaple were victorious 24 - 7.

We would also like to welcome back the boys of 1975 Devon Cup squad, who have decided after 40 years to meet for a beer or 2. Thanks must go out to Ian for all he has done to get them all here today.

Finally its with sadness we announce the passing of long standing member and former player Geoff Smith aged 81 after a short illness. Geoff played for the club during the sixties whilst working as a teacher at the former Grammar School where many of his pupils went on to play for our club. Geoff’s wife Margaret asked me to say what pleasure he had playing for Barnstaple. Our condolences and thoughts are with Margaret and family at this sad time. We will be noticing a minutes silence before the start of the Chiefs game to remember Geoff.

BARNSTAPLE DEVELOPMENT XV

To win a title needs a lot of hard work from all concerned, therefore, to win three in a row is astounding.

A few years ago the thought of fulfilling all their fixtures in the season was the most the Development side could think about. There has been a huge turn around in fortunes since Craig Bulley took over as manager, he has galvanised the core players and added a few more to make the Development team the one to beat in Devon Merit Table One.

This season there have been some standout performances from all the boys. Gav Mitchell, Barney Meadowcroft, James Lock and Iwan Williams deserve credit for their match winning performances and try scoring prowess.

Mark Galliford has come in as coach this year and along with Danny Ewing helping out, the team has gone from strength to strength.

Congratulations on winning the before unheard of 'hat trick' of titles, may you continue in the same vein for the coming seasons.

Pez's ponderings

Last Saturday after a very close game with Old Pats we decided to walk to the nearest pub to watch the England game 10 minutes before kick off...it was the longest after game cool down in history, thanks Topper for the 5 minute walk!!! About 15 minutes into the game we arrived in a small local pub with a few chairs and a few families….The families made a swift exit…The game got going and the banter started flying, it was great to see and showed a fantastic spirit within the group, this was enhanced later with some Singing at the back of the bus. Although the result didn’t go our way, with things to work on, on the field, the importance of the off field shone through. The Bond that you create off the field will reflect on it.

Today will be a very tough fixture with Old Reds wanting to get further away from the drop zone so their motivation is easy. Our motivation is internal and will be shown in our intensity and physicality. Should be a fantastic game to watch.

Before I go I must commend the Mighty 2s on their third successive title, and hope you all stay on to watch their final match and shield presentation straight after the first team game.

Thank you again for your constant and fantastic support

Steve

We are coming into the Festival and tour time of junior rugby with lots of game against team we don’t normally meet on the Pitch. Today our U11’s will be playing Yatton, but for them this is a chance to bring back the Children’s Hospice South west cup. This is a cup that has been going between to the two club for about 7 years whether they are juniors or seniors, let’s hope that although Yatton are bringing the Trophy down with them but that it stays here.

The Under 16's lost in the semi Final of the Plate comp against Exeter Youth, But are still in the chance of being in the Fishermans Cup final. Tomorrow will see them take on Cullompton here at Pottington Road at 1045am.

U15's lost to Okehampton in the Quarter-final of Plale, U14's lost also lost to Okehamtpon in the Semi Final of the plate and the U13's lost to the semi Final of the CUP to Kingsbridge.
